  Pagoh River Ranger Project
Pagoh Project Overview

In 2007 FON allocated some amount of funds to support a project developed by the Global Environment Centre (GEC) a non profit organization. The project is known as the Community based River Ecology Study and Awareness programme. The demonstration site for this project is in Pagoh and will take about 15 months to be completed. The Pagoh area in Johor was affected by the massive floods in December 2006/January 2007. The flood incidence has paralyzed many towns and the whole state of Johor for many months. The December 2006 flood is the worst in 50 years since the last floods in 1950’s. The implementation of the River Ecology Study and Awareness Programme for the community of Pagoh is mainly to educate the Pagoh community about the importance of the environment and to prepare them physically and mentally. In the project inception period from September 2007 to January 2008 GEC has initiated some of the activities scheduled for the Pagoh project. The aims of the project activity were to assess the project site suitability and to identify the community and stakeholders to be involved in the project. The preliminary assessment findings showed positive support from stakeholders and the local community. Three villages and four schools will be selected to be involved in the project. The Pagoh Project Steering Committee which has been established in January 2008 comprised stakeholders from multidiscplinary background such as the Drainage and Irrigation Department Muar (JPS), Muar Municipal Council (MPM), District Education Department Muar (PPD), Global Environment Centre (GEC), Southern Waste Management (SWM), Lanadron Plantation, Pusat Internet Desa Pagoh (PIDP) and Komuniti Bestari. The secretariat for the project is JPS and PPSC is chaired by the State Assemblyman of Mukim Jorak/Pagoh itself. Under this project all the 3 villages and 4 schools will be trained to become the River Ranger. Trained River Rangers will have to initiate their own activities at village level and schools and to become eyes and ears for the project.
